Cocktail Hour Isn’t Just for the Guests—Here’s How You Can Enjoy It Too

Cocktail hour might just be the most underrated part of a wedding day. It’s that magical window where the ceremony glow lingers, golden hour kicks in, and everyone finally gets a drink in hand. But too often, the couple misses it entirely—off taking photos or managing logistics.

Here’s the truth: You can have beautiful golden hour portraits and be present with your guests. It just takes a little intention.

1. Do a First Look and Knock Out Portraits Early

Doing a first look means you can get wedding party, couple, and even family photos done before the ceremony. That frees you up to actually mingle during cocktail hour instead of sprinting through a shot list.

2. Trust Your Photographer with Golden Hour

You don’t need an hour-long portrait session at sunset. Ten to fifteen intentional minutes with the right light—and the right photographer—can give you glowing, editorial-level images without missing the party.

3. Communicate the Plan to Your Vendors

Let your photographer, planner, and catering team know you want to prioritize being at cocktail hour. When everyone’s on the same page, they’ll help make it happen without sacrificing anything visually.

5. Make It Worth Attending

Want your guests to linger and relax instead of rushing to their reception table? Give them a reason:

  • Signature drinks or a seasonal cocktail
  • Live music or a curated playlist
  • Light bites that are actually good (not just passed crackers)
  • Lounge seating for vibe + comfort

Cocktail hour is where some of the most candid, joy-filled moments happen—laughter with old friends, guests seeing each other for the first time, golden light pouring through trees. It’s worth being part of.

And yes, you can still get those dreamy sunset portraits and sip champagne while the band plays.
